A Boy’s Blood

I went to bed last night trying to get the true story of Emmett Till out of my mind.  I awoke this morning with that boy still on my mind.

I wonder what he would have grown up to be?  A young teenage black boy in 1955, apparently outgoing, smart, with a good sense of humor. Murdered in the most atrocious way by two grown white men, possibly with others, possibly with even one or two black hired “assistants”, for Emmett having had the “audacity” to allegedly “come on” to a young white woman – a Mississippi “lily” and wife of one of the murderers – Emmett, his short life and his horrible death, became the major inflection  point in the civil rights movement ensuing from that point to this moment.  While we will never know for sure all of the details and participants in his murder, it is unimportant at this point.  What is important is that we NEVER forget what happened to him.

Of course I have known a little of the story for many decades, but only just recently have I sought out more information.  What prompted me was viewing an interview on one of the major news tv channels of Timothy B. Tyson, about his latest book “The Blood of Emmett Till.”  I haven’t even finished reading it, a thoroughly researched and investigated history book, scholarly written to capture the full context of Emmett’s murder in the days of Jim Crow, and what the event, “witnessed” around the world, meant to the civil rights movement.  Mr. Tyson actually sat down and interviewed the Mississippi “lily.”

Then I found this documentary story on You Tube, which is rather long, but thorough, with interviews of his mother many others who were caught up in this sad story.  It is not easy to watch, but we should.

Today, with all the hate we are witnessing, with old “norms” suddenly coming out in the open again, encouraged by BMT (Bottomless Moral Turpitude….that which occupies the Oval Office), and a significant portion of  his base of supporters, we who stand to defeat such hate must not forget the past.  That past is really not distant at all.  Many of the sons and daughters and their children of those who belonged to Citizens Councils, KKK, and many other collections of white people who committed acts of terrorism against blacks and their few white supporters during the 1950’s and later, are still very much alive today.  I would like to believe that most have turned away from such racism, but the fact is that many have not.  The ghosts of the murderers of Emmett Till, and those who murdered so many other black people during those days, walk the Earth.

Be vigilant O Warriors of Truth and Love.

VOTING 2020

I would encourage everyone to browse the article in the following link, concerning the readiness (lack thereof) of our 50 states voting systems:

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/as-2020-nears-pressure-grows-to-replace-voting-machines

BMT (Bottomless Moral Turpitude…..aka, the guy occupying the Oval Office) has clearly stated that he would listen to any information offered by a foreign entity, during his own 2020 campaign.  Take him at his word.  We know that Putin’s hackers attacked our election process last time, that is a given that all of the USA security agencies agree on, which BMT has, right on the world stage, “dissed,” as he snuggled up to murderous Vlad.  And there is absolutely no doubt that Putin will, and is even right now as stated by Robert Mueller, working at interfering with our sacred democratic elections.

Now in a rational world, with at least a modicum of ethical integrity, both the Republicans and Democrats and others would be very concerned about this threat, come together, and do everything Congress is capable of doing to thwart the threat, even pressuring BMT.  But “it ain’t happening.”  The Senate under good old Mitch, who is determined to block anything that comes out of the House, is blocking legislation to help bolster states’ voting systems.

While voting systems do need to be upgraded in many states, the threats to our election process at large are many, and America’s most hallowed attribute, democracy, is at stake.  There are any number of ways for devious villains like Russia, or China, or Iran, or who knows, to inject problems and outright chaos into our campaigns and the final voting process.  Russia wants to re-elect BMT.  China probably would love to see him defeated, as well as Iran.  No doubt there are anonymous players who may be anywhere in the world, acting as a loose-knit consortium of hackers, or just as a lone wolf right here in some bedroom, even a teen who is a genius with hacking, who could create tremendous havoc during the campaigns and on election day, and during even the electoral college – actually without ever “touching” a voting machine.  I could list any number of ways to “screw with” Americans’ voting, but I shall not as I don’t want to put any negative thoughts into the ether.  Any good security consultant would back up my claim I am certain.

The point is, that IF we had a genuine President in the Oval Office, one who really does put America first, and not just himself, that President would be standing behind the podium, with the real Seal  behind her or him, telling the world in no uncertain terms that NO interference will be tolerated, and then meeting with all the necessary key people to make sure all measures are undertaken to prepare for 2020.

I know this will not happen.  I know because I know BMT will condone any “help” he can get from Russia, ignoring what the other opportunists may do, all to enhance his chances of being re-elected, thus avoiding being arrested and prosecuted for obstruction of justice, and probably a number of other crimes related to his financial sham empire, and possibly other matters related to his “attitude” toward women.  He will do any and everything he can to extend the protection of being in the Presidency, to run out the clock on the indictments surely being framed.

I also know that if BMT does lose the 2020 election tally, he will find some way to sue in court, alleging some fraud – ala the “hanging chad” episode of years ago – and will do all he can to remain in office.  Remember who he has appointed to the SCOTUS, should such a law suit be put before the Court.  It is conceivable to me that by hook or crook, he will do everything possible to remain in office, even to the point of totally shutting down the functioning of our Government.

So, hang on for a ride friends!

SPECIAL REQUEST:  I would love it if any and all my blog readers would at leas share my blog link with a friend or two or more!  I do not write this blog to make a dime really, only to voice my opinions, and share these with the world.  Thank you.

The Mask of Racism Today

Racists in America today are crafty, stealthy and often intelligent, daily finding ways to pull a mask over their intentions, words and activities.  Favorite generic methods of disguising their racist Weltanschauung typically are obfuscation, denial, rationalization, use of “alternative facts,” historical distortion, and attempting to flip their rhetoric when challenged to say the subject of their attack is really the one who is racist.

Racists today are generally just “slick” publicly, and you might never know for sure of their hateful feelings, even if you sat and had dinner with them.  However, people of color in particular are well endowed with an innate “racist detector.”  After over 400 hundred years of continual oppression, blacks have no problem detecting the vile vibes of racists, no matter how well they try to tuck it in.  Blacks remember vividly scenes in their history, like the one below, of a black man, Allen Brooks, lynched by a mob in 1910, right in downtown Dallas.  Today people dine outdoors at this major street intersection. I myself at one time lived a stone’s throw from the spot.  If one sees a HD version of the photograph, one will see very young boys and girls, and women in the crowd.  Back then, whites could openly display their racism at any time, in fact it was their way of life.  I think it is mainly only because of civil rights laws, that many of the progeny of those who hung this man, and hundreds of others, or dragged black men behind pickup trucks as in the case of Mr. James Byrd, dragged to his death by two sick racist men in 1998 (only 20 years ago), here in my Texas, are kept in check; otherwise, I think we would see many, many more instances of racist violence.

lynching dallas 1910

On one hand there is the temptation to feel that racism will “fade away” if the subject is not injected continually into the public discourse, and if the flames are not fanned.  I think this is wholly naïve.  Many whites who sat and did nothing, accusing Dr. King of “stirring up trouble” – passed on their attitudes to their children, and at least some of that is being passed on to Gen X, Y and their children.  So racism is truly inter-generational.  For this reason, I totally advocate confronting racism on every front, on every street, in every setting, on the job, in the pews and not giving any quarter in this continuing civil war.  This is not the time to be timid in standing up for justice.  The price of not doing so is the USA becoming a failed state.

The Power of Words: Hateful words.

The racist, vile words that pour from BMT’s (Bottomless Moral Turpitude) mouth are only rivaled, contemporarily, by the likes of the Philippine dictator, Duterte, who brags about the attacks, killings and general oppression he has personally participated in or instigated.  There are of course, other examples, when words piped over the air waves in Rwanda resulted in the largest genocide in recent times.

It is worth viewing this interview (Warning:  contains scenes of extreme violence and corpses), to see just how far unchecked hateful words can go toward irrevocable civil violence:

Then, of course, looking back a half century the world saw this:

I am not insinuating that the situation in the United States could reach this level of hate and violence, but only wish to show the potential of hateful, racist words.

Slogans spoken by BMT, such as the recent “go back to where you came from” (perhaps not an exact quote), and picked up at his rally this week where his admirers converted it into a chant, “Send her back,” evoke in the collective conscience of African Americans and other people of color, and all Americans who stand for the true meaning of the Lady in the harbor of NYC, horrible memories of the atrocities committed by white terrorists on black populations a hundred or so years ago, such as Greenwood (there were over 200 “race riots” – a term used by white media since “white domestic terrorism” had not been coined yet, and frankly has not to this day been put into circulation.  It brings back memories of countless lynchings of black people (and whites who stood in the way), as memorialized at the Montgomery museum:

https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/

We cannot afford to allow BMT to continue unchecked in his hate speech.  In the last two and a half years incidents of domestic terrorism and attacks on Jews, Blacks, and LGBTQ Americans have risen dramatically….and now with his campaign of hate in full swing, things will likely get worse.  Even a “low level” of civil terrorism must not be allowed to happen.

Unfortunately, I do not see any signs that things will get better in the next few years, even if he is not re-elected:  he has opened the door here at home and across the Pond to neo-nazis, and other nationalists and “alt-right” scared whitey’s.  Likely the coming decades will continue to be riddled with events that attempt to undermine our humanity.  I pray that we do not see any more Rwanda’s or Kosovo’s.

We who understand the nature of the “moral arc,” however, cannot stand by and be casual observers.  It is up to us to dress in the armor of rational logic and depth of good spirit to call out and combat such ignorant and evil haters.  Eventually things will change for the better, but future generations must always be vigilant.

The bright side of human nature is that we have an innate capacity for forgiveness, as seen in the above video about Rwanda, as seen in the reconciliation hearings of South Africa, and the fact that America rebuilt Germany and Japan after the wars they started.  Forgiveness and loves conquers all.

What in the F*#@ happened to the Republican Party?

I am in my 70’s and have voted for Democrats in all but one case, when I voted for (the late) Ross Perot, because at the time he seemed like someone who could change the game in DC.  For that distant reason, I can somewhat understand why many people voted for BMT (see my prior blogs:  Bottomless Moral Turpitude) in lieu of HRC.  I confess, I did not vote in the last election, and frankly I do not regret it:  I did not in any way feel like I should vote for the present occupant of the Oval Office, tagged BMT – that was infinitely clear at the time – but I could not subscribe to a continuation of what I knew HRC presented.  I had supported Bernie up until he was no longer in the race, and had donated to his campaign…..when he was out, I was out. I knew BMT would be bad, but no one could have ever guessed just how bad!

BMT at the time was seen by many as a way to upset the table and see what shit fell here, and stuck there.  Many people were fed up with the status quo, especially the same people who are still today unemployed, or working for wages set decades ago, and having family members dying from addiction and lack of access to quality medical care and preventative services.  I can dig the feelings of those people….I feel them.

What kills me today, after all BMT has done and not done – factually, not his invented hype and snake oil bullshit – is why so many of his “base” is still his “base.”

The answer I am sure is multi-faceted and extremely complicated, if we fool ourselves.  Really it is not complex at all.  The fact is that most people who support BMT in the so-called swing states are either people whose ancestors settled far away from people of color for various reasons, or people whose grandparents or great-grandparents were the fairly new WHITE immigrants from Europe, poor and living in the Balkanized neighborhoods of Chicago, New York and other cities teeming with unwashed masses of humanity, of all ethnicities and colors.  In those cities from around 1919 into the 1960’s were scenes of hundreds of what White media dubbed “race riots” (to black people, in today’s terminology, those incidents were domestic terrorism committed by whites on blacks).

The progeny of those people are the over-50 white people in those swing state cities and rural communities of this very day, and anyone who thinks that the racist feelings of their parents and relatives – some of whom were directly involved in beating black women and small children to death, shootings, burning down entire black neighborhoods, dropping bombs from airplanes on Greenwood residents, and hundreds of lynchings – were left by the bloody roadside are entirely, bizarrely naïve.

If this was not true just how in the world does one believe that BMT could be able to positively motivate his MAGA’s, especially at his rallies, as he is doing even as I write this?  Many of these red hats are out and out racists, and the fact is, a large portion of white Americans are racists, or are so totally ignorant of the history of race in this Nation that they have no table to even set their moral compass upon to assess their own feelings about race.

I have also mentioned previously in my blog posts, that the fact that large swaths of this Nation are served predominantly by local conservation stations with feeds piped in from conservative media corps that easily control what is piped to the masses of  information under-served peoples across the Midwest and rural South.  This is quite clear when one hears them answer interview questions, or read their comments on news feeds, parroting information that has come out of the hateful mouths of the “upstream” anchor shows.

On the other hand, their are those people who couch their positive feelings about BMT in financial and economic arguments, even when they themselves are feeling the negative impact of BMT’s trade “policies.”  It is just beyond stupid.  They would cut off their noses to spite their faces rather than admit they don’t have a clue about the truth of the effects of BMT’s machinations.  I guess to them this is the power of positive thinking:  if you repeat a half-truth or total falsification enough, maybe it really will come true to your benefit.  And as long as they feel like things are getting better, or going to get better, they apparently are perfectly ok to see people of color suffer – “not my problem.”  I suspect many of these same people go to some church occasionally, and it is obvious they check their faith in the pews, for they show no compassion beyond that they feel for poor, beleaguered BMT.

And oh Lord, then there are those who are so worried about the Nation “going socialist.”  My gosh, what is Social Security? What is Medicare? What is the VA? What is our national highway system? Get real dummies.  Get WOKE!

Perhaps many of these people may have voted Democratic, or as independents before.  However, most voted Republican I will wager, and still do and still will.  I could understand in the past someone voting for Reagan, but good God, vote for BMT?  What a bunch of frigging hypocrites.

REPARATIONS in America: What WE WHITE folks can do now.

Seriously, WE do not have to wait on Congress to do anything about reparations.  There is much we WHITE peeps can do right now….I mean Right NOW!

Take a look at these links for example:

http://comingtothetable.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CTTT-Reparations-Guide-June-19-2019.pdf

https://www.americamagazine.org/arts-culture/2018/11/28/my-ancestor-owned-41-slaves-what-do-i-owe-their-descendants

Step No. 1 is to open our fucking eyes and minds, ok!  Stop being defensive every time the subject of racism and/or reparations is brought up.  “Well, it’s not my problem, I didn’t live “back in those days,” or we immigrated from Europe long after the Civil War period, so my family is not accountable:  such typical feelings and responses.  All wrong.  Just like those “newcomer” IMMIGRANTS from Europe benefited and their progeny continue to benefit from A) the labor, sweat, blood and lives that African Americans gave to this land; B) having a leg up on most black people in this country who were told to bring yourselves up “by your bootstraps” when they had no fucking boots to start with, by virtue of capital accumulation, education, housing and you name it, we collectively – white people – not only carry the PRIVILEGE  that goes with our whiteness in this land, but carry the burden of DEBT that we have never begin to pay for that privilege!

I doubt seriously that there ever will be found an amount monetarily that would even come close to repaying black people in this country (or the rest of the African diaspora).  What is the price for the millions of deaths in the Middle Passage, the centuries of lynchings and beatings to death, the mothers dying in childbirth after being raped by their “owners,” deaths in the fields slaving in the heat and disease infested plantations, or all the black men and women treated like sub-humans through the last two centuries, even to this day, with cops being allowed to choke black men to death for selling single cigarettes.  Then there is the matter of blighted neighborhoods, guns run in by white nationalists to encourage desperate black youths to kill and shoot at will, the terrible inequities in income, savings, and hell, on and on.

But the issue must be addressed and STUDIED within Congress, and right now good ol’ boy Mitch is determined to block that Bill.  POX ON HIM.

But, we can begin to do SOMETHING, in spite of  Senator Mitch McConnell, who had a great-great-grandfather who owned 14 slaves. (I myself had a G-G-G who owned 50 slaves, and probably other distant kin who also were slavers.  Yes, I bear the guilt they should have carried, and am committed to doing all I can to be an advocate for reparations.)

So I urge all readers, especially whites, to get on board.  Read the documents I linked above.  The time is long, long overdue for action!  We all can do SOMETHING!
