The New Immigrants: Robots

So do we need a “big beautiful wall to keep them out?

The fact is that human immigrants are not stealing jobs; 99% of the jobs they fill few US citizens want to do or even will do.  But today I am not here to debate this moot issue, rather I want the reader to reflect critically on the possible real impact of robotics and AI (artificial intelligence).  I don’t want to look far into the future, but rather just conjecture on say the next 10 years.

Robotics (and AI that controls them) are the new immigrants. THESE new immigrants will take jobs from citizens, yet where is the outcry and concern except from other than a handful of very smart people, Andrew Yang for instance (and myself of course…LOL).

There is no wall that can be built to keep out these agile minded “guys.”  They are coming in caravans and hoards.  Beware.

There are few jobs, especially ones that follow a rather narrow script of activities:  from factory jobs to call centers, that will not be impacted.  Of course call centers largely have been shipped “off shore,” to India and Mexico and Jamaica, et al.  But AI will bring the cost down to the point where multi-nationals opt to just connect you to the big AI help desk in the sky.  So it is not only the United States that will be challenged by these pesky AI creatures, but rather much of the first and second worlds.

If you are in any job that frankly is “low wages,” you really need to be thinking about what to do after you get your notice.  What can you do?  Train in HIGH technology is one option:  smart people first have to make robots and initialize AI programming for these immigrants to perform.  So you can train to become one of the “technologists” or even better, a “keeper,” as I call these new classes of human workers.  Because of the profits from relegating low wage jobs and benefits more and more to the pile of obsolescence, like mining coal for instance, there will be no stopping the tide of robotics and AI, so YOU must RE-INVENT yourself!

This may require MOVING physically to locations where smart jobs are or will be placed, which for now are cities like Austin, Texas for example; to get the type of training you will need you also will likely have to relocate, for a lot of the low wage jobs now are at factories and facilities sited in the heart land of America, plants that will use robotics soon if not already, but who will NOT be offering any education to employees:  they will turn to the universal pool of people who have the knowledge they need, and not be altruistic in retraining their current employees. (I realize some are, but consider fully where that training may lead.  Think BIG PICTURE, LONG TERM.)

So what will be a few of the potential societal impacts of this flood of new immigrants?  There will be effectively created a new age stratification of our society:  an increasing very low income level at the bottom of the economy, increasingly highly dependent on “welfare” (or crime), and sadly, those of color will be triply effected due the present enormous inequities of capital and income;  and right above them will be the Technologists, able to sustain and increase incomes to some extent, but forever locked into the “middle class” state; above these techies will be the “Keepers” of the robotics and AI, highly educated and specialized people whose incomes far surpass those below…..these are the new “doctors, lawyers and engineers” who even today are seeing their heyday wane; then at the very top are the owners of all the robots and all the AI.  These people, mostly people and families who already control most of the capital and wealth in the world, will have incomes that are light years ahead of all others.

The mobility of human workers to move up from the “welfare” class to say the “keepers” level will be close to impossible.  Most everyone will be captive in their respective classes.  But is that much different from today’s scenario?  Not really, but the future does not bode well for a reduction in the number of people and families at the two bottom levels of the hierarchy.  This is why, if you are smart, you will do everything you can to determine what education or training will help you to the next level, and get that training now, no matter what it takes.  The future of yourself, your progeny and theirs depends on conscious decisions you make in the next 18-24 months.

Now there are other choices, if you don’t want to “play the game.”  You can choose to live your life without worrying about income, and be a free spirit, a free agent even, using your common sense, inventiveness and native creativity to enjoy life as it comes.  Become the antithesis of this robotic world, a 21st century hippie, finding novel ways to stay afloat, being aware that within you is the power to live your life unfettered by “intelligence.”  That is not a bad option really.

1619- 2019 400 Years and Counting

Angela was her name, an African woman, who might very well have been of royalty back in her home region, we don’t know.  Regardless, we can assume rightly that she lived in a well-ordered society, one full of the sounds of life, of domestic animals, of toddlers and small children playing around villages, while older girls worked with their mothers, contributing and learning the skills from a timeless past, such as pounding yam and braiding and adorning their hair.  Older boys were learning the skills of manhood, including hunting, wrestling,  and becoming warriors.  Angela’s people were colorful, were light on their feet, and the sounds of drumming and the sounds of dancing often filled the air.  When anyone of Angela’s people fell ill, there were potions and wetted plants placed topically, and the incantations of the priest to relieve the pain and illness, often as effectively as any Western treatment today.  The priest was also readily available, for the price of a chicken or yams, to perform a divination reading for those with a question about their lives (which was at least as effective as any psychologist or spiritual advisor today).  Life was good for Angela.

We will never know how she came to be ripped from the Motherland, how she survived the Passage, how she was treated by the pirate sailors who took her and others, and in 1619 sold her and some 20-30 other Africans to European American planters in Jamestown, Virginia.  We do know that Angela and the hundreds of thousands of other African peoples brought to this land and placed in involuntary servitude and treated worse than any animal for hundreds of years, retained the strength and vibrancy of their ancestry, and without their magic –  America would have been, period.

The history of early Jamestown is readily available on the web, but in the last few days the New York Times has published what will become a publishing legacy to be read by generations to come.  Here is the link:

Just double click the above image, and just fyi you will have to at least enter your email and go through a few commercial “ads” to get to the article, but it is well worth it.  There are multiple essays, each quite lengthy, so be prepared to spend some time – quality time.

It should be apparent to anyone who is not themselves still shackled with the collar of racism, slaves to their emotional, primeval ignorance, that any claims of America being now in a post-racial society since President Obama was elected, are patently false.  Today we see the greatest rise of racism since the lynching days of Jim Crow.  America, the very foundation of this great experiment in humanity is now at risk.  Wake up!

A Case for Euro-American Studies in Universities

Does it not strike you, my fellow white American, that whereas there are various ethnic and gender studies programs in many universities and colleges across the US, there are really no equivalents (to my knowledge) that focuses on white people in America.

There are African-American programs, Asian programs and women’s programs – but no “white boy/girl programs.”

Does that not strike you as reeking of ignorance?  Here we are well into the 21st Century, and we white Americans think we know ALL about ourselves.  And from that perch we render judgement, demean, rob and pillage those who could be great allies within humanity.   The truth of the matter is we know very little, at least about that which should really count in our lives and relationships in a growing diverse, soon-to-be minority-majority Nation.

Sure, we know some of what was “taught” to us in school and later in college, for those who went.  Liberal college programs of course offered opportunities to study about European history and culture, and the white-washed versions of American history and government, et cetera.  But have you ever considered that you did not really learn about white America is its raw and unexpurgated nakedness?

Have you ever asked yourselves, what is white culture?  Is there one white culture in America?  Or questions like what really is the “white trash” class in America?  Or what traits and characteristics, driven by historical cultural antecedents and religious agents, has resulted in “us” being what we are today, especially with respect to living with those who are people of color?

By exploring for answers to such questions, perhaps we would find what caused and continues to cause, our hunger for controlling others, and our penchant for greed, violence and war.

Moreover, I think that within such studies, we should seek answers as to why so many white people are racially prejudiced, and of course, why so many are outright racists.  This topic begs critical analysis, for two reasons.

Presently those of us who are prejudiced and racist are creating a tension that may break the very core fibers of what America can be at sometime in the future:  a place of peace, of prosperity and acceptance for all interests and expressions of life.

Secondly, we white people really owe it to ourselves to shed the hard cocoon of enmity toward those who do not look like us (keep in mind we are mutants).  James Baldwin said once that (white) people’s history is impaled like a butterfly on a pin, which is even a better trope to make my point:  we white people will never realize our God-given potential as human beings while we continue to flutter, caught in the trap of our own hate.

So, this is the case I make for “white studies,” that we can begin to understand who we really are, and accept our place in a world of all colors and beliefs.

Also, I don’t know how much “room” there is left on Mt. Rushmore, but I do hope one day we will see a president of color, and of course, a female president there.

A Boy’s Blood

I went to bed last night trying to get the true story of Emmett Till out of my mind.  I awoke this morning with that boy still on my mind.

I wonder what he would have grown up to be?  A young teenage black boy in 1955, apparently outgoing, smart, with a good sense of humor. Murdered in the most atrocious way by two grown white men, possibly with others, possibly with even one or two black hired “assistants”, for Emmett having had the “audacity” to allegedly “come on” to a young white woman – a Mississippi “lily” and wife of one of the murderers – Emmett, his short life and his horrible death, became the major inflection  point in the civil rights movement ensuing from that point to this moment.  While we will never know for sure all of the details and participants in his murder, it is unimportant at this point.  What is important is that we NEVER forget what happened to him.

Of course I have known a little of the story for many decades, but only just recently have I sought out more information.  What prompted me was viewing an interview on one of the major news tv channels of Timothy B. Tyson, about his latest book “The Blood of Emmett Till.”  I haven’t even finished reading it, a thoroughly researched and investigated history book, scholarly written to capture the full context of Emmett’s murder in the days of Jim Crow, and what the event, “witnessed” around the world, meant to the civil rights movement.  Mr. Tyson actually sat down and interviewed the Mississippi “lily.”

Then I found this documentary story on You Tube, which is rather long, but thorough, with interviews of his mother many others who were caught up in this sad story.  It is not easy to watch, but we should.

Today, with all the hate we are witnessing, with old “norms” suddenly coming out in the open again, encouraged by BMT (Bottomless Moral Turpitude….that which occupies the Oval Office), and a significant portion of  his base of supporters, we who stand to defeat such hate must not forget the past.  That past is really not distant at all.  Many of the sons and daughters and their children of those who belonged to Citizens Councils, KKK, and many other collections of white people who committed acts of terrorism against blacks and their few white supporters during the 1950’s and later, are still very much alive today.  I would like to believe that most have turned away from such racism, but the fact is that many have not.  The ghosts of the murderers of Emmett Till, and those who murdered so many other black people during those days, walk the Earth.

Be vigilant O Warriors of Truth and Love.

The Power of Words: Hateful words.

The racist, vile words that pour from BMT’s (Bottomless Moral Turpitude) mouth are only rivaled, contemporarily, by the likes of the Philippine dictator, Duterte, who brags about the attacks, killings and general oppression he has personally participated in or instigated.  There are of course, other examples, when words piped over the air waves in Rwanda resulted in the largest genocide in recent times.

It is worth viewing this interview (Warning:  contains scenes of extreme violence and corpses), to see just how far unchecked hateful words can go toward irrevocable civil violence:

Then, of course, looking back a half century the world saw this:

I am not insinuating that the situation in the United States could reach this level of hate and violence, but only wish to show the potential of hateful, racist words.

Slogans spoken by BMT, such as the recent “go back to where you came from” (perhaps not an exact quote), and picked up at his rally this week where his admirers converted it into a chant, “Send her back,” evoke in the collective conscience of African Americans and other people of color, and all Americans who stand for the true meaning of the Lady in the harbor of NYC, horrible memories of the atrocities committed by white terrorists on black populations a hundred or so years ago, such as Greenwood (there were over 200 “race riots” – a term used by white media since “white domestic terrorism” had not been coined yet, and frankly has not to this day been put into circulation.  It brings back memories of countless lynchings of black people (and whites who stood in the way), as memorialized at the Montgomery museum:

https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/

We cannot afford to allow BMT to continue unchecked in his hate speech.  In the last two and a half years incidents of domestic terrorism and attacks on Jews, Blacks, and LGBTQ Americans have risen dramatically….and now with his campaign of hate in full swing, things will likely get worse.  Even a “low level” of civil terrorism must not be allowed to happen.

Unfortunately, I do not see any signs that things will get better in the next few years, even if he is not re-elected:  he has opened the door here at home and across the Pond to neo-nazis, and other nationalists and “alt-right” scared whitey’s.  Likely the coming decades will continue to be riddled with events that attempt to undermine our humanity.  I pray that we do not see any more Rwanda’s or Kosovo’s.

We who understand the nature of the “moral arc,” however, cannot stand by and be casual observers.  It is up to us to dress in the armor of rational logic and depth of good spirit to call out and combat such ignorant and evil haters.  Eventually things will change for the better, but future generations must always be vigilant.

The bright side of human nature is that we have an innate capacity for forgiveness, as seen in the above video about Rwanda, as seen in the reconciliation hearings of South Africa, and the fact that America rebuilt Germany and Japan after the wars they started.  Forgiveness and loves conquers all.

REPARATIONS in America: What WE WHITE folks can do now.

Seriously, WE do not have to wait on Congress to do anything about reparations.  There is much we WHITE peeps can do right now….I mean Right NOW!

Take a look at these links for example:

http://comingtothetable.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CTTT-Reparations-Guide-June-19-2019.pdf

https://www.americamagazine.org/arts-culture/2018/11/28/my-ancestor-owned-41-slaves-what-do-i-owe-their-descendants

Step No. 1 is to open our fucking eyes and minds, ok!  Stop being defensive every time the subject of racism and/or reparations is brought up.  “Well, it’s not my problem, I didn’t live “back in those days,” or we immigrated from Europe long after the Civil War period, so my family is not accountable:  such typical feelings and responses.  All wrong.  Just like those “newcomer” IMMIGRANTS from Europe benefited and their progeny continue to benefit from A) the labor, sweat, blood and lives that African Americans gave to this land; B) having a leg up on most black people in this country who were told to bring yourselves up “by your bootstraps” when they had no fucking boots to start with, by virtue of capital accumulation, education, housing and you name it, we collectively – white people – not only carry the PRIVILEGE  that goes with our whiteness in this land, but carry the burden of DEBT that we have never begin to pay for that privilege!

I doubt seriously that there ever will be found an amount monetarily that would even come close to repaying black people in this country (or the rest of the African diaspora).  What is the price for the millions of deaths in the Middle Passage, the centuries of lynchings and beatings to death, the mothers dying in childbirth after being raped by their “owners,” deaths in the fields slaving in the heat and disease infested plantations, or all the black men and women treated like sub-humans through the last two centuries, even to this day, with cops being allowed to choke black men to death for selling single cigarettes.  Then there is the matter of blighted neighborhoods, guns run in by white nationalists to encourage desperate black youths to kill and shoot at will, the terrible inequities in income, savings, and hell, on and on.

But the issue must be addressed and STUDIED within Congress, and right now good ol’ boy Mitch is determined to block that Bill.  POX ON HIM.

But, we can begin to do SOMETHING, in spite of  Senator Mitch McConnell, who had a great-great-grandfather who owned 14 slaves. (I myself had a G-G-G who owned 50 slaves, and probably other distant kin who also were slavers.  Yes, I bear the guilt they should have carried, and am committed to doing all I can to be an advocate for reparations.)

So I urge all readers, especially whites, to get on board.  Read the documents I linked above.  The time is long, long overdue for action!  We all can do SOMETHING!

The Intergenerational Tipping Point.

As I see our American society today we are at the tipping point, the fulcrum being the foundation of what America will look like the next 100 years.  On one side of the lever are those who “want to make America great again,” and on the other end of the board is a conglomerate of Millennials and Gen Z, of all colors and persuasions, who have little knowledge of the “before,” but are grounded in what they daily see around them.

It is clear that the advantage is with the newer generations.  They will win.  The only question is how much damage, direct and collateral, to our society and our environment during this civil war.  It appears those now in control continue accelerating their “rape and pillage” mentality, rolling back environmental laws put in place over the last 100 years by those who understood at least some of the values needed to preserve our natural resources, and attempting to change laws protecting women, infants, poor and elderly people, all in the name of their “God.”

So the next few years will tell the final tale, as some factors such as global warming may go beyond any retrievable dynamic, setting the conditions for Earth’s ultimate demise as a habitable, heavenly creation.  Moreover, if certain measures being implemented by the current “old school” reach full criticality, such as rolling back Roe vs. Wade, killing Medicaid and reducing Medicare, messing with Social Security, inflicting untold misery on those seeking asylum at the foot of Lady Liberty, and continuing to start wars that they themselves never personally have to fight, then the next 100 years of potential will be sucked into cleaning up the muck they are spreading.

I remain positive however, and know the energy of the younger generation to effect the needed changes is limitless.  They are “woke,” and “overstand” clearly what they must do.
